Where to begin? Which designer to showcase? Too many to have just one favorite!
After many hours filing through photos and notes taken this past September at Fashion Week in New York City I hope you are all as excited as I am to see what is in store for us this coming Spring!
September 5 2008 - We saw BCBG Max Azria early in the day where simple silk and jersey dresses effortlessly draped the body. In the evening we stopped by to see Erin Fetherston and her 1970's sportswear inspired collection with deliciously decadent hues and fabrics.
September 6 2008 - Kicking Saturday night off was Rock And Republic where we saw tight pencil skirts, ruffled blouses and witnessed the skinny jean stand its ground for yet another season.
September 7 2008 - Sunday afternoon brings us the ever enchanting Diane Von Furstenberg collection where we witness the new age "Rock Goddess" in all her glory stroll down the runway. We spotted Uma Thurman and Jennifer Lopez enjoying the show.
September 8 2008 - Moving on into the week Sergio Davila gives us a men’s collection with inspiration drawn from South America and the streets of New York City all with a sophisticated edge. Davila also introduced a women's collection this season with a concentration on strength and comfort.
September 9 2008 - What a Tuesday it was, starting off with Monique Lhuillier who did not disappoint giving us a collection mixed in structure and billowing grace.
Mid-Tuesday afternoon Betsey Johnson showed her collection. Now, one cannot expect Betsey Johnson not to give us, yet again, one of the most playful shows of the year. Johnson showed an apparent doll house theme inspired, one can assume, by the birth of her second granddaughter. But my favorite part of this particular show was when we saw a few bridal inspired looks making a statement down the runway with the hands of our brides cuffed behind them. Irony?
September 10 2008 - We welcome Wednesday with the delightful Michael Kors.
A prime coloured palette stands out across the runway as stripes and polka dots breeze by. Did someone say yellow polka dot bikini? Michael Kors brought out Blake Lively, Bette Midler, Heidi Klum and Rachel Zoe just to name a few.
September 11 2008 - A busy Thursday starts off in the morning at Malan Breton. And for all you hard core fashionistas I expect you to know that Malan Breton was indeed a contestant on Project Runway Season 3. Breton was inspired by the 5 elements: Earth, Water, Air, Ether and Metal. The collection remained glamorous and sophisticated with help of the film 'Star' showcasing women of substance. Day dresses, sleek tailoring, evening wear in various flattering shapes with hints of eastern influence (Kimono prints) flew down the runway.
Moving into the evening the tents are about to burst as fashion insiders await Custo Barcelo and his dramatic collection sure to be filled with prints and colour, while the line to Zac Posen is nearly out the door. I hail Zac Posen for his luxurious leopard-print dresses, my favorites in his collection by far. Now if only I had a red carpet to shut down! Who did we see at Zac Posen? It was a star studded event with Claire Danes, Anna Wintour, Bette Midler, Venus and Serena Williams, Lauren Hutton, Marisa Tomei, Leighton Meester, Joy Bryant, Rachel Zoe, Juliette Lewis and I'm running out of breath!
September 12 2008 - The last day of Fashion Week until February? I don't believe it!
Bright and early a packed house squeezes into the Project Runway Season 5 finale. Having had the pleasure of being present at the Season 4 finale where Tim Gunn said the winter Christian Siriano was, and I quote, the next great American designer, I am afraid the Season 5 finale paled by comparison. Not impressed was I.
With one last lustful look I glance over my shoulder to Bryant Park and with a sigh of relief ask if it’s February yet. |
While we all await Spring here are a few Fall 2008 trends to keep you updated this season:
- Embrace those curves. Draw inspiration from the 1940's with a focus on the waist. Check out Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent for this look.
- An order of plaid and a side of tweed are on the menu. For modern plaid looks check out Karen Walker and Alexander McQueen and for all your tweed needs look to Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera.
- Fabulously long layers flatter. Erin Fetherston and Marc Jacobs showcase this trend for fall.
- More of a Minimalist? Calvin Klein and Jil Sander will inspire your fall look.
- Belt it Ladies! Let your own personal style and creativity shine with a belt that glitters or maybe even heavy metal.
- Remember Ladies not all trends look good on every body type and each trend has an age appropriate variation.
For Makeup this season embrace Fall’s favourite colour, violet, in eye shadows and mascara. And rule a night out on the town with your most glamorous red lips.
I look forward to reporting to all of you from Fashion Week in New York City this February ensuring you all the inside track on Fall 2009!!
